Come join Westchester Parks Foundation and REI for our International Coastal Cleanup Day on the Bronx River Reservation in White Plains!

We will be dividing into three projects:

1. River Trash Cleanup & Analysis (20 volunteers)

  • This program addresses floatable trash, one of the three major water quality issues on the Bronx River. Volunteers participate in real science, through hands-on experiences. The information we will collect helps find the source(s) and stops trash from entering the river in the first place. The project engages volunteers by promoting outreach to local businesses whose products end up in and along the river, especially uniting messaging around the harm to our waterways caused by non-biodegradable products. Volunteers will put on waders and help us count the bottles, cans, straws, and more that we find caught in the trash boom.

2. Graffiti Squad (15 volunteers)

  • Graffiti is a persistent issue throughout our county parks system, especially on the Bronx River Reservation and the county trail ways. We have purchased an eco-friendly solution to help remove graffiti as well as a coating to prevent future graffiti. Volunteers will be applying these solutions with paint brushes and using a power washer to wash it away.

3. Land Debris & Trash Cleanup (15 volunteers)

  • Volunteers participate in real science, through hands-on experiences. The information we will collect helps find the source(s) and stops trash from entering the river in the first place. The project engages volunteers by promoting outreach to local businesses whose products end along the river, especially uniting messaging around the harm to our waterways caused by non-biodegradable products. Volunteers will be using trash pickers and gloves to categorize and remove litter and debris along the Bronx River Reservation.

All supplies will be provided. Volunteers must wear old clothes that can get dirty, long pants & closed toe shoes.

Our group will be meeting at the WESTCHESTER COUNTY CENTER PARKING LOT EAST. Tell the person at the ticket booth you are volunteering with Westchester Parks Foundation and they will allow you to park for free.
