2021 Impact Report

More than ever, #ParksAreEssential

Westchester Parks Foundation is proud to continue to #StandUpForParks, and recognize their critical importance to our county. In 18,000 acres of county parkland, community members can find safe and beautiful places to play ball, sit on a bench and read, walk with a friend, hike through the woods, picnic with family, and find peaceful open space. Here in Westchester, we are lucky to find all of this just outside our doorsteps. Parks are our sanctuaries, healthy places where people can safely go and tend to their physical and mental well-being. We are honored to support these public spaces, and we do so each year with the support of our dedicated board, our enthusiastic donors and contributors, our tireless volunteers, and our many partners. Thanks to everyone who supports us, in 2021 a record year of volunteer hours and sweat equity were contributed to our parks, a safe and vital day camp for Westchester’s most vulnerable children happened at Tibbetts Brook Park, thousands of hours of safe recreational opportunities were created at programs such as Bicycle Sundays and Winter Wonderland, and creative and long-needed projects continue to develop throughout our park system.

Advocacy

Westchester Parks Foundation applauds the administration of Westchester County for their courage and fortitude in supporting the county’s parks and open spaces. County Executive George Latimer and the Board of Legislators have made tremendous progress in clearing the backlog of capital projects that are vital to the infrastructure and upkeep of our parks system.

Tibbetts Gazebo

In 2021, a longtime wish list project of Westchester Parks Foundation got underway. Through funding from a generous private donor, the Gazebo at Tibbetts Brook Park has begun restoration. Walter Sedovic Architects, locally based in Irvington, is the architecture firm chosen for the project.

Lake Management Plan

This year, for a multi-year project working with Princeton Hydro, we completed a Restoration and Lake Management Plan for Tibbetts Lake. The project is a result of a grant from NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, and with a Management Plan now in hand, WPF is positioned to begin applying for additional grant funding to complete needed restoration work on the lake.

Volunteers

In 2021, parks continued to be a reliable and safe outlet for gathering and community.  Our Volunteer Program saw individual volunteer numbers continue to grow, and corporate volunteers returned to pre-pandemic levels. Many of the corporate projects were a place for co-workers to reunite—or in some cases meet for the first time!

Finances

Westchester Parks Foundation ended 2021 with revenues of $3,840,464 and expenses of $3,047,102 (unaudited). The resiliency of our earned revenue streams and business operations, coupled with receipt of additional Federal PPP funding and strong controls on spending, contributed to an overall continued increase in net revenue with designated projects to benefit.
